Chapter 14
“I’m so impressed that you got this first sketch to me so quickly, Avalon. This is beautiful.” Arielle picked up the sketchbook and held it at arm’s length to get a different perspective. “This is going to work really well. You can talk to our set designer about the colors. But I know for certain that the lake needs to be turquoise because it’s mentioned in the lyrics of the first song.”
Avalon stood up and pointed to a poster for Phantom of the Opera to the right of Arielle’s desk. “I’m visualizing this color here, in the night sky, only a bit brighter and deeper, if that makes sense.”
“That’s very close to what I was seeing. Before you paint the actual flat, you can test paint some of the colors, and that way we can make sure we’re all on the same page.”
“Cool.”
“I’m excited, Avalon. I can’t wait to see the next sketch.” Arielle paused. “What’s that racket in the reception area? We don’t tolerate yelling in this school outside of scene study.”
Avalon listened in horror as she heard her name mentioned. “Oh, no; that’s my mother’s voice.”
Avalon and Arielle stared at each other as Candace stomped down the short hallway to Arielle’s office.
“Your moth—”
Candace stormed into Arielle’s office. “Yes, her mother is here!” She turned to face Avalon. It’s been a couple of years. I see the green-and-blue hair is gone. You almost look nor … Aren’t you going to give me a hug?”
Choking on the words she tried to say, Avalon stared at her mother, who was dressed expensively and inappropriately, a designer bag hanging on her arm as if it were to be photographed for advertising purposes. There was no light in her eyes at seeing her child for the first time in over two years, only a cold, punishing stare that demanded respect. Avalon looked at Arielle, who seemed frozen in place, then at Candace, whose ire was mounting. Avalon walked over to Candace and nervously put her arms around her, feeling the mechanical return of her mother’s weak embrace.
“Honestly, Avvie, I could hug a telephone pole and get a warmer response.”
“Who told you I was here?”
Candace laughed. “Ah, wouldn’t you like to know who betrayed your confidence. Well, I’m not going to share that with you. But your loved ones aren’t quite as loyal as you think.”
Avalon looked into her mother’s eyes. “I don’t know how you knew where to find me, but nobody who loves me spilled anything to you. I don’t even have to think about it. Because I know nobody did.”
Arielle sighed and looked at Candace. “If you’re reading our local papers, which are also available online, no doubt you saw the recent article about our school and theater where Avalon was interviewed.”
With a scowl on her face, Candace turned sharply to Arielle. “So you’re the infamous Mrs. Dalworth. You’re hardly worth kidnapping, much less going to prison for.”
Standing, Arielle walked over to Candace. “Why don’t we leave Phil out of this.
